Day 20/21: Trip Leaders

Hello amazing families!

We just want to thank you for entrusting us with your incredible young people. This group has been super inclusive, kind, and participatory despite some of the expected challenges along the way. They have written reflections (including a letter to themself that Profe Mara will send to them in 6 months) and have new ways of seeing the world and what they are capable of. It’s fair to say that they have processed much and will continue to process more even after this trip is behind them. They may not be able to remember all 3-week stretches of school this year, but they will remember their time in Costa Rica.

In case it’s helpful, here are a few prompts specific to our trip to help you all go deeper into conversations, or maybe spark a flood of details.

Pura vida,

Trip Leaders Jay, Mara, Debby

Prompts for Discussion:

Who were the people in your home stay family? What was their relation to the other families? What did you all talk about?

What kinds of food did you have each meal? Can you describe breakfast lunch and dinner? Any foods that you never had before? Which were your favorite? What recipe did you learn from your homestay and can you try to make it for us?!

Can you tell me more about STIBRAWPA and how that works?

So how do they make chocolate from Cacao? What’s that process?

What are all the sounds you could hear at night and early morning?

What did you learn from Bernarda about Climate Change and how it affects the community there?

Who did you interview for the class project? What surprised you the most? Will you invite me to the final presentation at school on your project?

Can you show me some of the larger set of photos that were/will be uploaded shortly after the trip?

What were the activities that you did with the kids in the week long semana santa camp?

What was it like not having technology for 3 whole weeks?!

What was the boat ride to the host community like?

Can you teach me some Bri Bri phrases that you learned?

How has your Spanish improved?!

How did you plant new banana trees?

Tell me about the mid trip reflection in Puerto Viejo. What were the highlights?

What was it like when it would rain really hard there?

How did you spend your free time in the late afternoons and early evenings, either with your friends or the families?

Is there something that you want to do differently either on your own or here with our family after this adventure?

What’s this I hear about mud?
